"Oldest Inhabitant of Scio"

Photo reconstructed from a picture of Alexander Sumpter in The Sunday Oregonian newspaper published Sunday, July 14, 1901. Alexander's wife, Nancy, had passed in 1895. He was living with his daughter Malinda and her husband James William Compton, near Scio, Oregon. He was also the father of Sarah Jane "Jane" Sumpter who married Supplina P. Hamilton near Scio, in Linn County, Oregon on June 10, 1858.

"ALEXANDER SUMPTER

SCIO, Or., July 13. - Alexander Sumpter, the oldest inhabitant of this section, was born in Tennessee in 1810. When he was 3 years old his parents moved to Kentucky. The family emigrated to Indiana in 1817, and to Missouri in 1831. In 1834, in Wisconsin, the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Nancy Prather. Thirteen children blessed this union, of which 11 are living, four in Oregon and seven in Washington. Mr. Sumpter crossed the plains to Oregon in 1853, and settled on a farm six miles south of Scio. There he lived until 1872, when he moved to Scio, where he has since resided with his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Compton. He served as a soldier in the Black Hawk Indian War in 1832. Mr. Sumpter enjoys good health for one his age, and takes a great interest in the events of the times."
