Sufflina (Supplina) Hamilton Household - 1880 US Census Index

It's so little wonder why Supplina Hamilton used his name in print as little as possible. First off, it was a feminine sounding name. Though rare, when Supplina is recorded in the census it is generally a woman's name. Second, ... no one could spell it right. His name is continually misspelled in census records. The 1880 Census is a classic example. It took me a long time to find the full record because his name was spelled Sufflina. Here in this index card version of the census record it's misspelled twice on the same document. First as Surflina(s?) and second as Sufflina! Supplina's tombstone just reads, S. Hamilton. Later, when Jane died she made sure the world got his name straight when she put on her tombstone, 'Jane, Wife of Supplina Hamilton.'
