The Guns of Co. H, 1st Regt, Oregon Mounted Volunteers

The original inventory and valuation of the guns and revolvers that the citizen volunteers brought with them to the Indian campaign in October of 1855. These loose pages are Captain Davis Layton's written inventory of the armory of his men and their value; the soldiers were asked to supply their own horse and weapons. Pvt. Supplina Hamilton (S. Hamilton) is listed on row 68. If Supplina brought a rifle it's not recorded; he did bring a pair of Colt 5-inch barrel revolvers, possibly the Colt 1849 pocket revolver with a 5-inch barrel. Though his 5-inch Colts were valued at $40 in 1855, each of them would be worth over $1,000 today, and if in good condition much more. These were not quick-reloading; they were black powder and used balls and percussion caps.
